In an interview, The Internet band member Steve Lacy revealed that he would not date a black guy. The reason for it is due to growing up in a community surrounded by other black guys whom he’s come to see as brothers and competition, not romantic interests. This caused some controversy on Lacy’s part because of those accusing him of being a colorist or anti-black. Although Lacy justified his statements by claiming “As much as you or whoever thinks this sounds like b.s., it’s from a real place, I’m a nigga from Compton, I don’t dislike black people, I prefer to live here and be around POC because I love black people. I’m just not attracted to black boys, that is it. I still love them and want them to do well in life, we just won’t date. Sorry.”, although this still did not cut it for some people who took to call him out for his statements. Eventually, this led to Lacy refusing to answer any other questions revolving around his preferences. Preferring to answer those questions and clarify via his blog.
Some people, like myself, had taken to defend Lacy and his comments by observing from his perspective. It stands out that black people as a collective are expected to have similar opinions or tastes, such as worshipping the same (or similar) religion, eating the same food, and having relations with our own people. To differ from that is considered taboo some are willing to disown their family members for exhibiting that behavior. To me, I think it’s hypocritical of our people to condemn our preferences and behavior. We live in a period where we want conservatives and white people to see us as ourselves not as thugs or criminals up to no good yet we as a people are quick to criticize and judge our own brothers and sisters just for entering interracial relationships or preferring something different over what’s expected. For example, many females do not prefer bisexual males on account of desiring a dominant man to take care of them. Why should Lacy be the odd man out, not everybody is obligated to find specific groups of people attractive just because the masses want them to. It’s more aggravating if Lacy said he outright hated black people which he denied when the accusations came.
As a man who’s into more diverse types of people, I can respect and defend Lacy for being outspoken about his preferences. You can and will be into whatever you’re into and no one should tell you differently. Who are you to judge people for preferring to do things this way? It’s like your whole family is drinking juice but you find it disgusting and decided to try something different like soda, tea, and water. I recently started a poll to see whether or not people would agree, most did not respond but there are others who harbor some animosity towards a certain race in terms of attraction and others who hold one (not necessarily their own) in larger regard. Again Lacy doesn’t deserve the hate for his comments because he’s merely stating what interests HIM and who he feels right to be with him.
