Although What If… is more of an entertaining series that focuses on events where one minor or major decision led to a massive change in many realities. Taking place conveniently after Loki, What If… shows some of the realities, some good and comedic, some darker than most though in some way the story ends in explaining why the sacred timeline had to be what it had to be.
What If… although the storylines all fluctuate through different time periods, it all technically takes place after Loki when Sylvie Laufeydottir a variant of Loki decided to kill He Who Remains the man behind the Time Variance Authority who governs and oversees the sacred timeline enforcing protocol to ensure that the timeline does not breach. Because Sylvie was not meant to exist, her timeline deviated and she was taken from her reality which was reset by the TVA despite her young age, although she escaped and grew up surviving in apocalypses. When Sylvie and a Loki variant discovered He Who Remains’ citadel beyond the End of time, despite his warnings, Sylvie, unwilling to let go of her thirst for vengeance, kills him causing the timeline to branch and an infinite amount of realities to branch off. Worse there were even incredibly dangerous variants such as Kang the Conqueror and Infinity Ultron who desired to either conquer or destroy the multiverse. The sacred timeline remained unaffected by this massive change for some time until Spider-man & Doctor Strange had accidentally created an incident that led to variants of the former and their enemies to breach their timeline nearly causing the universe to crumble when other variants of Peter’s enemies began to breach through forcing Doctor Strange to cast a spell to make everyone forget Peter Parker was Spider-Man allowing the displace variants to return to their home realities. However the multiverse incidents didn’t stop there because Wanda discovered that there were universes beyond her own with versions of her living happily with their children she, corrupted by the Darkhold, began targeting America Chavez a young girl who can travel the multiverse forcing Strange’s intervention yet again. Subsequent events that followed led to Strange discovering the disastrous effects that occur when dreamwalking to other worlds or even displacing yourself onto another reality. Although Strange and America were able to defeat Wanda and talk some sense into her it became clear that the damage created was only the beginning when Clea revealed that he created an incursion by dreamwalking. With Ant-Man being the next superhero to discover the multiverse it raises a lot of questions but that’s another discussion.
You’d notice that the nation of Wakanda, the Black Panther’s home has been unaffected by the multiverse attacks or breach, instead they are dealing with political issues regarding their shared use of vibranium as well as threats from Namor. Thus their story doesn’t yet tie-in with the multiverse arc yet. However, variants of King T’Challa and Killmonger have some experience with the multiverse. In What If… because Ultron has transcending beyond his own reality and discovered the multiverse and the Watcher, realizing the threat he possessed, the Watcher was forced to intervene and recruit other variants such as Star-Lord T’Challa and King Killmonger from different realities to defeat Ultron. Although they were successful, Killmonger attempted to betray the team and steal the stones for himself, resulting in a tug of war with a programming of Arnim Zola. However this was all anticipated by the Watcher as they were frozen in place and imprisoned by the Watcher and Doctor Strange Supreme. The latter having agreed to watch over them for eternity and keep them from breaking free.
Although Black Panther and Wakanda currently has no ties to the multiverse that doesn’t mean it can’t later. There could honestly be a potential storyline that involves bringing Killmonger back onto the sacred timeline, despite his main timeline version being confirmed deceased, it is indeed possible to bring his equally corrupted and power hungry variant into the fold by escaping the pocket dimension he was previously imprisoned in. Trapped in a new world where his variant had died at the hands of Black Panther, Killmonger could attempt to establish a new world order and attempt to cripple the governments of the world by creating a cabal or Shadow Council composing of the worlds most dangerous individuals and assisted by members embedded in every nation both high and low class which requires the nation of Wakanda and perhaps even Talokan to intervene since if Killmonger discovers their existence he can manipulate them by using their anger against the surface world to create World War 3. Sharon Carter could even wind up joining him in his quest for power and vengeance as she also has a bone to pick with America for branding her a war criminal and forcing her on the run. Who knows Killmonger and his cabal could wind up even being used as an Avengers level threat after all he has the powers and the suit of black panther at his disposal as well as resources from other nations.
