In a spinoff of Love, Simon taking place in the same universe as the film follows a colombian/Puerto Rican/American teen named Victor and his drama involves his sexuality and relationships. After a brief struggle regarding his sexual orientation as well as him coming out to his family and friends. Victor decided to pursue a relationship with Benji another openly gay man. Despite having a great start, however, the couple began to suffer fallouts in part due to Victor’s mother Isabel’s rocky start accepting her gay son, as well Victor’s anxiety over the event and later him confessing about Benji’s sobriety to another openly gay man Rahim whom Victor began to develop a budding friendship with due to shared hardships. Then it comes a time where Victor begins to suffer a dilemma on whom he should be with, Benji or Rahim when the latter reveals his feelings for Victor.
The way I see it, Victor’s dilemma reminds me of another TV Show called Regular Show, the subplot of the series involves the main character Mordecai’s relationship drama. At first, we see him crushing on a humanoid Robin named Margaret and often displaying awkward behavior around her, Margaret also reciprocated the feeling eventually and genuinely likes Mordecai, eventually, the 2 become more than just friends when Mordecai decided to step out of the friendzone, however, things do not last very long as he’d hope when Margaret revealed she had gotten into her dream school which is far away and because of the opportunity she had to heartbreakingly pass up Mordecai’s offer to be in a real relationship with him causing Mordecai major distress that the women of his dreams had to leave him for her the sake of her dream career. Mordecai would eventually find love again in the form of a former fling named CJ, the 2 originally had a rocky start as friends due to a misunderstanding but eventually reconciled following a dodgeball game. Compared to Margaret, Mordecai shared more in common with CJ, liking the same shows, having mostly the same interest, and CJ reveals herself to be a much spunkier and casual character than Margaret. Although that relationship also failed, I still believed that Mordo and CJ should’ve worked it out based off the fact that they had more in common and CJ isn’t just some attractive girl that most guys would simp over.
That’s how I see Victor and Rahim. Benji is cool, very attractive, romantic, and basically every gay man’s dream but that’s about it. I liked Benji from the beginning because the series made him an ideal love interest for Victor but they don’t share a lot in common which is why they suffer fallouts because Benji cannot fathom Victor’s dilemma about being a gay kid from a religious and Hispanic family and does not understand that the little progress is somewhat a breakthrough for Victor in regards to how they were in the past. Instead, he chose to be more pessimistic about it. Things certainly didn’t help when Victor had sex with him in his house with his little brother, Adrian, inside still and Benji angrily outed him to Adrian, resulting in another fight leading to Victor getting ghosted by Benji. That’s when Rahim came in, as a gay person of color with conservative parents along with still being new to gay culture and relationships, Rahim can relate to Victor a lot more compared to Benji who was at least patient but subtly annoyed with Victor’s concerns. Victor, stressing about the situation decided to vent about what was going on between him and Benji, however by chance Benji found out that Victor confessed his sobriety to Rahim leading to him stating they need space. This led to Victor deciding to spend the day with Rahim leading the latter developing feelings for Victor. Eventually, as the 2 spent more time together during Mia’s father’s wedding as Benji refused to attend as Victor’s plus one, instead Rahim being in his place, Rahim then made those feelings known. The season ends on a cliffhanger regarding Victor’s choice with the viewer not being shown who Victor chooses leading for the viewer to take a guess until the conclusion arrives in the form of next season.
After seeing how Victor and Rahim have a lot more in common than Benji as the series progressed, I realized that Rahim is more for Victor than Benji, plus the 2 have been picking each other up in regards to their own issues (i.e. relationship drama)
